So it's been a minute since anything has been published to the Schroeder 'zine. Not 25 years, but still it's taken some time to come up with something to write. Obviously with the parental duties and the job responsibilities it takes real effort to create content that no one wants. In the hiatus from the last article we have seen a truly amazing leap in AI technology. This technology is so advanced that it can write songs, explain to you topics that you might be ignorant on, write a resume, suggest code for your web app... the possibilities are endless.I'm talking of course about ChatGPT. Everyone is talking about this and we here at the Schroeder 'Zine are kind of late to the party. ChatGPT Reviews the Schroeder Zine

Man, that last article of Tim’s, where he takes a large dump on working from home, was a real buzz-kill.  It wasn’t just that it was depressing, but it was so “presently” depressing, that is depressing solely about stuff happening in the present.  Of course, that’s not only what the Schroeder Zine is about.  Our Zine is about reminding ourselves how cool and fun the 90s were, and then—and only then—getting depressed upon reflection of that fun and joy through its stark contrast to the present, where we are all old, miserable middle-aged pieces of shit. I don’t like taking a detour and driving straight to the present jugular without the requisite ride to the past—and through that journey and back-- remember how we ended up in this filthy ditch.There’s a lot of paths we can take through the 1990s, but I have one for you: it’s the Rudy path.  “Oh Nate, you must have ingested too much kratom, what the hell are you taking about, Rudy?” First of all, no it’s not too much.  And second, how dare you be so rude.  If you grew up in the 90s you know perfectly well what I’m referring to: the 1993 Sean Astin classic hit “Rudy.” It’s about a working class little guy who is pretty dumb but likes Notre Dame football a lot, so he abandons his family and super cute girlfriend played by Lili Taylor, and through guts and determination, he ends up playing a little bit on the team of said sport for said university. It’s a great film because it really reflects the spirit the 1990s, coming as it did after the end of the Cold War when America was at its peak in optimism and global power, and where teenagers, like myself, could dream of becoming whatever they  wanted as long Jerry Goldsmith’s inspiring score played on repeat. Of course, growing up in Greenwich-- one of the wealthiest and most privileged towns in America-- is not the same as Rudy’s shithole steel mill blue-collar village, but you can fudge the origin story a little. And I didn’t play sports; in fact, I mocked it relentlessly, even going as far as wearing suspenders and a beanie helicopter hat during varsity baseball try-outs so I would be kicked off the team and forced to not play sports for spring semester, thus allotting more time to listen to ska music and smoke Lucky Strikes.And that’s where we get to my other passion of the 1990s.  Besides pretending to be Rudy even though I was nothing like him in any shape or spirit, there was the other 90s icon: the Rude Boy, or rudie or rudi.  If you’ve forgotten this thin-tied, bespeckled well-dressed lovable nerd of the ska scene, remember the lyrics of the famous Clash song “Ruddie Can’t Fail”: How you get a rude and a reckless?

That and the Jerry Goldsmith Rudy music will be part of your new Rudy playlist as you do some squats and down some Miller Lites. The song wasn’t from the 90s, but was featured in the very enjoyable 1997 flick “Grosse Pointe Blank”, starring John Cusack, which ironically was a nostalgia film about the 80s, but I still associate the song as a nostalgic item of 1990s and the fecund ska/punk scene of that time.Standing behind the Rudy on the screen and the Rudy on the sticky floors of ska shows was another well-known Rudy of the 1990s.  I’m referring of course to Rudy Giuliani.  Not the MAGA Nosferatu Rudy of today, but that prudish hard-nosed mayor of NYC who “cleaned up the city” or some bullshit like that, I never really paid attention. Nobody did then. Except for some jokes about how he replaced Times Square hookers with Disney characters, in the 90s suburban teenagers didn’t give a crap about politics.  It wasn’t on anyone’s mind.  Nobody argued about this or that thing from the Left or Right, or getting all concerned and worked up over stuff and wanting to cancel everything and everyone. There were no smartphones to make kids all offended and distracted and insecure. No obnoxious social media algorithm, precision-designed to incite hatred or fears about the collapse of the world.   The news was for newspapers, that is, for parents. There were Blockbuster Friday nights to rent movies like Rudy and rudies at the club to bum cigarettes off of, that’s pretty much it.  Indeed it was a wonderful innocent time of Rudy’s the 90s was.  Or was it?I could have ended with that but I promised this was a circle-- a downward spirally one-- to the depressing present.  The other night, I had a 101 fever but not Covid, so I got no sympathy or concern by my loved ones.  I decided to watch the movie Rudy after many many years.  Boy was I wrong about the character.  Watching it today, he seems like a really ungrateful, uninspiring dolt.  First, he had the opportunity to stay in his steel mill job, which seems now like an excellent paying union one—he’d be lucky to have that today; the factory has long been shut down.  Today, he’d be working at Dollar Store while dreaming of Notre Dame. Second, he has a pretty hot girlfriend and a chance to live in a nice, single family home.  No way could they afford that today.  And his dad is pretty cool and loving.  No, Rudy abandons all of this.  He goes to South Bend, where the rest of the movie he encounters a series of implausible hand-outs: the priest at the beginning gets him into a local community college; he gets help on his grades thanks to his horny friend played by a baby-faced pre-fame Jon Favereau; he gets a job and free room by some wise black landscaper dude.  He gets to play in the final game only because Notre Dame is winning by such a large margin.  And then he gets hoisted and carried off the field with drunken crowds screaming “RUUUUDEEE!!!”. I wish I could join that clarion call of the 1990s today—“RUUDEE!”-- but I simply can’t. Through my open source research I read that the real Daniel "Rudy" Ruettiger—whom the movie is based upon—was actually kind of a drunken douchebag who had really bad grades, didn’t care at all about academics, and who raided underwear from female dormitories. And he really milked his whole “Rudy” myth story after he graduated, even when people asked him to stop.  Whereas in the 90s I thought it was all about Goldsmithian grit and hard effort that makes Rudy a hero, now I realize it was just plain old luck and almost all of the movie was built on lies and self-aggrandizement. The only character I really liked in that movie was Rudy’s friend Pete, the younger version, played by Robert Steinmiller Jr.  If you recall Robert Steinmiller was a 90s staple.  He was a cute little tyke in the very underrated film “The Ref”, starring comic Denis Leary and Kevin Spacey (Jeez, I hope he didn’t molest the young Steinmiller during the making of the film).  And speaking of trauma, you must not forget the unforgettably depressing 1993 film he was in called “Jack the Bear”, starring Danny DeVito. Oh, so much fun that Danny Devito you think?  Wrong! This intensely dreary film is about this kid Jack and his younger brother Dylan.  Their mom died in a car accident. They live with John, played by Danny Devito, who’s a drunk. Their neighbor Norman is this neo-Nazi. Jack has a minor love interest. But he’s interrupted by Dexter, Norman’s kid, who wears a Nazi costume for Halloween, but John doesn’t really care about all this and drunkenly spouts racial slurs on TV.  This is just the first third of the movie. I could go on, but I would need to go to CVS to get a refill on my Zoloft. It's hard to describe the vibe a 90s film like “Jack the Bear” gives off, because mostly it’s the context in which you saw it.  Back then, there was no Netflix algorithm feeding you what you wanted.  There was no search engine, like a Star Trek “replicator” that instantly produced what you asked for.  You just “stumbled” unwittingly and without consent upon heavy, dreary childhood trauma movies and TV dramas, because that what was on cable TV on a cold, November Sunday afternoon on Showtime or Cinemax while avoiding homework and dreading the upcoming school week.  This was your prize.  And you accepted whatever scraps were given to you. A perfect example is Life of Brian.  No, not the Monty Python cult classic.  I’m talking about the little known 1992 TV series called “LifeStories: Families in Crisis”, season 1 episode 4 entitled. “Gunplay: the Day in the Life of Brian Darling”, a hilarious romp about a  10-year-old boy who is accidentally shot to death by his friend playing with a gun they find at home.  That’s all it is.  30 long dreary minutes of dark build-up and then BAM!-- an innocent boy is shot point blank in the fucking head, roll credits.  That’s true 90s entertainment for you.You see, along the glamour of ska and the holy heights of Rudy accomplishment, in 90s you would often wander into dark alleyways of cable TV where 10 year-olds get killed in horrible ways.  You didn’t ask for it, it just arrived out of nowhere, and you would try to forget. And often it took so long to get through such PTSD-inducing horror.  There was no smartphone to glance at.  There was nobody to text to when it was over. You watched in silence, you watched all of it. You ate it, because for every little boy shot or wearing a Nazi Halloween costume, there was always some happy and optimistic mozzarella stick in the 90s coming your way.And that is the point-- there’s a lot of the 90s trauma out there that one spends decades to suppress—those Jack the Bear moments, those cold and grey Sundays of the soul—and a lot of that decade was built on such loose sand, like ska itself. Not all ska is bad.  Bands like Mephiskapheles or Slackers still stand up to time for sure, but back then there was also a whole lot of Ska garbage that just about anyone would eat up because what else was there to do in downtown New Haven at night in the 90s? And that indiscriminate ska enthusiast is really embodied in the Rude Boy, I suppose. Pimply, thin-tied, big-rimmed glasses dork skanking it up with arms flailing and smelling of clove cigarettes and cheap beer, everyone cheering him on for no reason.  Can’t believe this was one of our ambassadors who represented us in the 90s. There’s some nutritiously filling ska steak dinners out there, but upon reflection it’s far crowded out by off-brand Nerds candy ska.  Much like watching all of “Life of Brian” (unfunny version), you would just stand there listening to this Rude Boy and all of his emptiness and bullshit enthusiasm, because there were no other options.  Again, no smart phone to save you.  Oh, the patience we had!  Painstakingly enduring Rude boys and child abuse TV shows—the perfect preparation for the tedium of a job working with Excel datasets and Java script that awaited you in the 2000s. Then we come around to the Rudy Giuliani of today. I need not go further into details here. You can see where I’m going with all of this.Each Rudy covered here, upon reflection, is a golem of sorts. A haunting figure who on the surface makes you nostalgic of the 90s but then joins your living nightmare of the present.  This series of Rudys exists on some other previously unarticulated dimension, a separate ring in Dante’s hell. At first it lifts you to the heady notes of Clash and Goldsmith and Ska, but then throws you back down to 2022 present, leaving you smeared over with L3/L4 spinal bulges, benzo withdrawals, thinning hair, and black screened social media addictions.  For every TGIF 90s night, upon further inspection, what persists today and perhaps what it always has been, was just a long Sunday afternoon of dread.

The Circle of Rudy Life

The other day, our colleague and friend, beloved writer Nate Dog wrote some pretty fucked up shit about the royal family, an institution which he deems unnecessary and outdated. Timed with the Queen's passing, the article may read to some as a tactless and deranged foray against England's royal family that segues into night terrors and demonic forces, known as Jinn; then ties it all together with simulation theory and virtual reality headsets, sex toys. Even though I agree with everything he said, the problem with the royal family isn't just that it references historical nepotism and undeserved inherited power, but actually celebrates it – instead of pretending it doesn't exist, like everywhere else in the world. That just feels discourteous. No less, many people defend the antiquated and merely symbolic royal family as a necessary monetary tourist attraction. Obviously they're being defensive, unreasonable and simply want to cling to some sort of pretentious national identity: one where they secretly think their King or Queen is emperor of the world, all the while taking twisted credit for creating America yet telling us our monarch-less country sucks. Even though we haven't had a monarch since King Elvis, we still limp along somewhat, so basically fuck off.It's important to emphasize that an elderly person passing is not funny. The “Queen' is still a person. This isn't some morbid agenda to seize opportunity and present my soon to be revealed, novel idea in the wake of a death and a significantly less charismatic, doofus offspring (instead of someone awesome, like King Ralph played by John Goodman in the iconic 1991 film that involves him going to burger king for a whopper after being coronated, like a complete champ) taking the iron throne. Here is the plan:The royal family gets replaced by a giant water slide. This thing has got to be ginormous, preferably the largest man made structure currently standing and it should be incredibly unsafe, fun and expensive. Not only are water slides great and time-tested, but building the world's largest water slide would become a profitable, tourist-trap attraction across the globe. What's more is it will not only bring in outside tourism but locals can enjoy it as well, as opposed to walking past Buckingham palace yet again which can only be exciting for so long. When you see a map of the world, you will see the geographical misrepresentations corrected, and flipped upside down, because why not, and on that map sits a picture of that water slide right smack in the middle of the country with an arrow pointed at it saying “Awesome!” in red letters.In order to build this water slide, a civil engineer would be necessary to make sure that the water's pumping system circulated enough water so people's asses wouldn't get sheered right off from the friction of plummeting down a couple miles on a slide. The back up pump stamens and the main water filtration system would help filter out all the massive shit since the slide will syphon water from Buckingham palace's water lines, including septic leach pipes, for efficiency since roughly 20,000 gallons of water will be necessary to ensure that the hump before the landing strip can accommodate differing body mass indexes. Massive solar panels would be installed around the perimeter and fed to various battery backups to ensure that the pump was getting enough power. Given that the upwards height of the slide is going to be a minimum of 2 miles, you're going to want a landing strip to compensate for the steep 50 degree drop which should be approximately 4-5 miles long.Naturally the cylinders supporting the slide would have to be in place along with steel girders to distribute the stress of weight across the actual slide's fiberglass composite. Anyways, yup.

It's a Slippery Slope With the Royal Family, Literally

If it is bright it's always this shakey bokeh lens flare stuff. Can you please just make it marginally visible or not flared out. Don't tell me it's because the mood of the film calls for that type of cinematography, that's just lazy.

Did You See This Movie

Everyone is getting canceled these days. Hollywood actors, influencers, authors, podcasters, politicians.  Even dead people who we thought were pretty cool, like Churchill, are apparently just as bad as Hitler (he got canceled too).  Being dead is the ultimate cancelation though.  Indeed, all of life is really about being canceled and replaced over and over, slowly over time.  All your cells that make up who you are didn’t exist about seven years ago—those were canceled; this new (older, shitty) “you” is just a collection of atoms and molecules that blindly followed the same tedious instructions to re-create “you” because you fed it some nutrients to survive (they probably all despise you, they all want to cancel and quit you and get promoted to something bigger, better, and more sophisticated).  Nature will cancel you whether you like it or not.  It’ll watch you play out your pointless theater act of existence, and then cancel you, replenishing the soil with the atoms that will level up into more dividing cells that result in some other sack of shit.  Being middle aged and waking up miserable most mornings, sometimes I can literally feel this process play out-- my cells getting canceled in real time thanks to angry nose-ringed pink-haired progressive cells fat thumbing angry tirades on Twitter to boot out Boomer cells which retaliate by creating daily inflammation in my joints and muscles, sending signals to my brain cells and reminding me that I’m just a rotting collection of stringy meat, ducked taped together for yet another meaningless day of existence. So where I’m going with this is pug dogs.  You see, according to a recent study pug dogs aren’t  considered “dogs” anymore (1).  Or at least “typical” dogs.  That’s right, the Progressive Woke Left Fauci Scientist Cabal mob have officially canceled the pug dog! I guess they want you to believe a typical dog is one who leads a “healthy” typical happy life, with a normal skeletal and pulmonary structure, without radical physical notions.  Due to endless iterations of breeding, those cute, bulgy-eyed, wrinkling, curly-cue tailed congested little beasts with frying pan-smacked faces are now officially “atypical.” And by “atypical” I guess the article means it’s not OK to exist as a sick, fat ball of folded flesh with deformed skulls, blocked airways, heart murmurs, and other horrible traits totally overcompensated by their intense lovable anime character looks. First off, if they’re not typical dogs, then what the hell are they now? Mongoloid cats? Mutants? Do you think the pug dog even thinks of itself as “dog” anyway? Why do we care in the first place? Why am I even writing about this? Heavy metal fan and French philosopher René Descartes famously called dogs, and animals at large, nothing more than robots - or automatons, as robots didn’t exist then - possessing no real mind of their own, and by extension, no soul.He could have just stated that and moved on.  But nooooo.  To prove his point, according to one historical account (2), he dissected his wife’s dog, spilled out all its organs on a table, and said (insert French accent): “Hon hon hon yea aaahhh you zee we do not find ze soul in ze robot.  It’s l’automaton! Ehhh, look at me, I’m French.  I go and jerk off now. Bon soir, haha hehe.” OK, I don’t know why he’d be talking with this French accent or who he’s addressing in this instance.  He was quite a secluded chap from what I hear.  The point is Descartes was the first to cancel dogs as Dogs. I mean he denied them having a fucking soul.  He thought, therefore he canceled. He was a Caninecelator. And isn’t that what it means to get kicked off Twitter? You don’t really exist anymore after that, do you?  You have no soul.  You might as well have the skeleton of a pug dog, you useless deformed fuck.  Descartes was a real douchebag.  He made these unjustified claims about dogs when he had almost no idea what it would be like to be a pug dog.  Maybe pugs are really happy having heart murmurs and stuffy noses.  Maybe they like it. Maybe it makes them feel great.  Maybe smushed snouts make them more sensitive to certain subatomic particles or wavelengths of light and energy that give them higher levels of consciousness and connections to the universe that no humans, even Descartes, could possibly possess or begin to comprehend. Maybe pug dogs are the real “humans,” the ones who possess souls and we’re the real dogs, that is we’re the slaves to them.  We’re the atypical.  We’re the non-Dogs. In fact, the only major difference between us and pug dogs is that pug dogs are ugly and deformed on the inside while cute and benevolent on the outside, whereas humans are ugly and deformed on the inside, and ugly and deformed on the outside. We’re probably not even human beings at all, but a figment of some pug dog’s advanced simulation playing out in the consciousness of his fucked-up cranium. Of course, we brought this upon ourselves.  The effort to de-dogify the ugly pug has been mankind’s centuries-long cruel obsession thanks to its own vain, entitled sense of beauty.  You see, the ancestors of the pug were purposely bred to become “ugly” and then used as props in portraiture, especially by the French and English aristocracy starting in the Renaissance to make their inbred members look prettier.  It was a kind of “chiaroscuro” but instead of light and dark contrasts, it was contrasts in beauty and ugliness. Nobody needed to always look prettier, of course, than Marie Antoinette.  She had lots of moral deformities to hide, so why not thrown in a wrinkly little “pug cushion” to increase her radiant glow?  Let them eat pugs instead!  The aesthetics of the asthmatic canine really stands out in the painting on the right:  Here we forget about little miss ghostly white hydrocephalic freak thanks to this tiny monster she’s holding, where the painter just so happens to add a little “dark” complexion to the dog’s visage.   It’s like Bob Ross, except racist. It's the 21st century now.  Pugs are not dogs, boys are girls, girls are boys, and Churchill is Hitler, so let’s try to help our pug overlord dogs out. I’ve tasked my assistant (aka my daughter) to design a prototype prosthetic to apply to pug dog heads so they’ll appear more “Typical Dog” and more normal to the average human.  Call it a counter pug chiaroscuro where the objective is to decrease the contrast in looks (and indeed invert it entirely) between man and dog, master and slave (see above).The artificial snout is fitted over the head and supplies a reliable Darth Vader-like breathing assistance device, along with various cybernetic eye pieces and flashing do-hickies to carry out proper dog-human engagement protocols.  This feature also embraces Cartesian sensibilities about the “automaton” nature of these beings and thus establishes human control, superiority, and technical prowess over the them.  This ought help appease the angry Leftist mob who wants to cancel them, and the soulless Cartesian douches who want to cancel not just dogs but the very existence of dog minds.  The balance is now restored.  Long live the Pug Dogs!1) 2)

Let’s Help the Pugs Out

I moved to Echo Park in the early 2000s, it was early enough into its phase of gentrification that outsiders would ask me if I was living in the dangerous barrio whereas my peers, who were now locals as well, scoffed at the idea. The reality was, it was a bit of both. Record stores, cafes, indie rock clubs were already in place with new ones and yoga studios primed to open their doors in the coming years – and still, drive bys, muggings and assault were re-occurences to the dismay of the neighborhood's generally peaceful residents.Twenty years later, it's an affluent neighborhood and has been one for some time. Rents soared, as did property values, the dodgers became a good team backed by a lot of cash. The pandemic forced some of these business to close their doors, and yet new ones sprouted up in little time. The city finally decided to repave the roads so the new douches­ wouldn't be bummed about anything looking janky, and at some point between then and now, açaí bowls reared their heads.Didn't understand what an açaí bowl was the first time I heard about it, didn't care. I cooked at home, saved money, and ignored food trends or smoothie culture altogether. A decade or so passed until much to my surprise, I discovered it's basically a bowl of lower-sugar (sometimes) sorbet topped with chopped fruit and granola drizzled in honey or agave. Suddenly, it clicked for me: the açaí bowl is actually damned good.Personal, family related reasons prompted me to leave LA for just shy of two years and it was on the east coast, just blocks away from The Schroeder's old P.O. box that I became familiar with a local açaí bowl chain that would change my perspective on not only fruit in a bowl, but myself, forever.During that stressful period, with the second wave of covid roaring, and being a stranger in a once familiar land, I found myself more often than not buying these açaí bowls nightly. I would clasp this little bowl of “evening respite” and savor every bite of banana, chopped mango, blueberries, strawberries, granola, and frozen açaí puree with a honey drizzle. Rinse and repeat.However, if one were to examine the economics of açaí bowl spending, extending this treat that I deemed “necessary for my sanity” out an entire year on a daily basis would result in roughly $4000 spent on açaí bowls annually. Consequently, the routine pre-made açaí bowl had to go. Then came the occasional Trader Joe's microwavable one, and pureeing the açaí and dicing the fruit in the kitchen.When I finally returned to Echo Park, I squinted my eyes through the blinding, cloudless sky and navigated a walk through the park where palm trees again felt like exotic and mystical bits of scenery dispersed throughout dying sub-tropical grass.I figured that açaí bowls must by now be to Southern California what the cheesesteak is to Philly and I was undoubtedly now in their mecca. Ended up trying about five places in my neighborhood back to back, one bowl a day, with mixed results that also came with an understanding that I had a lot of options out here.As I waited to adjust back to life in SoCal, I did so with a thawing açaí bowl clutched in my hands, and accepted the fact that I am not only now, but was always, one of the douches. It turns out, being a douche tastes good.

On My New Found Love of Acai Bowls and Douchery

In the 90s, many things existed. This is generally accepted. Two of the things that existed were Nine Inch Nails musician Trent Reznor and The Schroeder 'zine. This government funded research paper strives to examine the similarities and differences between the two and why one flourished and had a prosperous career while the other one clearly did not:Similarities:Trent Reznor is a bipedal mammalian organism on earth as are the members of the Schroeder 'zine, allegedly, and share the same “eyes, ears, nose, mouth” configuration we see repeated among many different species.Neither Reznor nor The Schroeder staff attended Church. Trent Reznor frequently criticized western religion; the members of the Schroeder were only concerned with powering on the video game console a few feet from the sofa they languished on with a bowl of Count Chocula in their laps. Therefore, they did not allot much attention to the matter. Neither were religious, whether it be due to strong opinions or lack of available brain power. (see fig. 1)Differences:Trent Reznor went on to produce critically acclaimed LPs with a world wide audience, and then became an instrumental composer of both records and motion pictures OSTs.In contrast, The Schroeder zine ended abruptly after a few years and garnered significantly less recognition than Trent Reznor, did not receive critical acclaim but instead failed to register on any sort of radar that would result in a negative or positive appraisal. The Schroeder 'zine was primarily distributed on the shelves of a record store in New York City, NY, where the members of the zine frequently had to return to pick up the remaining copies at the end of each month so the store could save on dumpster space. It was reported in one instance that a handful of the zines were acquired by one woman so she and her daughter could boil them down and make “papyrus” for a school project.Reznor's music played on the radio and his videos on MTV; he also took part in interviews. This tactic, known as “people being familiar with who you are or at least your product” stands in contrast to The Schroeder's obscurity and appears to ultimately be the deciding factor. (see fig. 2)Conclusion:Trent Reznor benefited from an institutionalized form of favoritism that The Schroeder 'zine was denied access to for various unfair reasons, making his success over the Schroeder Zine not only dumb but also total BS.

America is synonymous with COVID at this point.  I got it after years of avoiding it, and because I was vaccinated and had an omicron variant, it wasn’t as bad as what full force would’ve been.  Don’t get me wrong, it still sucked, I don't recommend it.I didn’t want to pass it to my wife and kids because I’m not a maniac, but I failed in that because they did eventually get it once I was negative.  That being said, I did all the things in trying to avoid passing it to them.  I stayed locked away in a room and binge watched TV while eating advil like it was candy to try and alleviate the pounding headache that came with this crappy illness.So what masterpieces did I watch?  Most notably, Stranger Things… Season whatever… The nostalgic shit is dumb.  It’s absolutely everywhere and it’s patronizing bullshit.  The people who know, know Kate Bush was good, I can’t believe that show made her chart again - it really speaks to the state of the music business.  Furthermore I can tell you all the movies they’re referencing, and frankly people should watch those instead.  To the folks who are really into this show and are too young to know the references, this is the equivalent of thinking you’re into the blues because you listened to Led Zepplin or the Rolling Stones or something.  Go to the original.  I did like the nod to Altered States.  That’s about it.Then I went on a sports kick and watched ESPN’s 30 for 30 about the 1986 Mets - they won the world series that year.  Now some of you might be like “ew sports, no jock talk please” but hear me out.  This was a ragtag team of degenerates in the mid 80s in NYC who loved to party and should not have been winning but they did!  Keith Hernandez even testified to congress or some shit about having done blow.  It was amazing.  These guys were animals, as hedonistic as you can get.  I mean at one point in the documentary they announce that some of the players had been arrested at a fine Long Island establishment called… “Cooters”.  Now, call me crazy, but I’m pretty sure that’s not going to be the upper echelon of nightlife in New York, and I would even go so far as to say, without knowing the place, that they were probably pretty permissive at Cooters.  So just imagine what kind of insanity you have to be getting into to not only get thrown out, but to get arrested at that fine establishment.  This brings me to another point. Think about the kind of greaseball guinea scumbag only found in New York that buys a nightclub and says “I know what to call this joint… Cooters”.  You got that guy in your mind? Yeah, these are the idiots I grew up around.  Meanwhile, in the documentary the Mets then won the 1986 world series.So those are the things I occupied my time thinking about and watching while quarantining with COVID.
